Adur River Walking Safari

September 13 @ 9:30 am - 11:45 am

This two hour safari will begin with a short introduction about the unique characteristics of this SSSI.

The Adur River around Shoreham is a very special and protected site – known as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This intertidal stretch of river and site of mud flats and salt marsh is a haven for many birds providing rich nutrition and also roosting places. Regular inhabitants such as Oystercatchers and Turnstones are joined by migratory and over-wintering birds such as Redshank, Lapwings and many more. It is also a much loved destination with its beautiful scenery and easy accessibility from Shoreham By Sea.

The river is a living system that supports multiple habitats and species but it is struggling with multiple challenges and threats. We will also share a little bit about the work of the Adur River Recovery Project that is happening to support the restoration of the river and how you can get involved with Friends of Adur SSSI to help.

Then we will take to the river banks. Along the journey we will share guidance and knowledge to help you protect and enjoy this place.

We will be joined by birding expert Tony Benton of Shoreham District Ornithological Society.

These safaris are aimed at:

  • Members of the local public wishing to learn more about the SSSI
  • We especially welcome teachers and group leaders who would like to incorporate the learning into their work.
