The Adur River around Shoreham is a very special and protected site – known as a Site of
Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
This intertidal stretch of river and site of mudflats and saltmarsh is a haven for many
birds providing rich nutrition and also roosting places. Regular inhabitants such as
Oystercatchers and and Turnstones are joined by migratory and over-wintering birds
such as Redshank and Lapwings and many more. It is also a much loved paddling
destination with its beautiful scenery and easy accessibility from Shoreham By Sea.
The river is a living system that supports multiple habitats and species but it is struggling
with multiple challenges and threats. We will also share a little bit about the work of the
Adur River Recovery Project and how you can get involved with Friends of Adur SSSI to help.
This two hour safari will begin with a short introduction about the unique characteristics
of this SSSI. Then we will take to the river. Along the journey we will share guidance and
knowledge to help you paddle with care and reduce your impact on this fragile habitat.
